Hex of the Day-Martyrdöd : Hexhammaren

Haven’t posted on here in a minute but as of late I really haven’t found anything that has caught my attention more so I also haven’t had time to really look. So to much of my surprise I found this awesome release Hexhammaren by Swedish crustpunk horde Martyrdöd that hit the spot for me today. Fast, brutal, heavy, metallic, even catchy. The title track Hexhammaren is honestly just a fun metal jaunt that exemplifies classic rock n roll leads, great solos mixed into the crust influenced riffage. A powerhouse of a track its like a shot of caffeine I needed this morning as I did more mundane chores around the house. Martyrdöd doesn’t seem to rely on any sort of gimmick or “look” just straight forward music with very talented band members. With some tracks clocking in at just over 2 mins long they are still outrageously written well by musicians who know what they are doing. I especially love on the track Hexhammaren the change in pace to a more blackened rock n roll riff to end the track, it’s just so well done overall.

I’m hooked. Really enjoy what I have heard so far and it’s nice to just listen to metal without much frills. Martyrdöd are definitely on my radar now and I highly recommend checking them out if you like this sort of genre. Hexhammaren is a no fill release and every track is great, powerful, raw, and sinister at times.

Martyrdöd are found on Southern Lord Records where I found some more info on them.

“In a scene overabundant with clones of the founding/front running acts of the genre, Martyrdöd manage to remain heavily unique in their filth-ridden approach. While undeniably influenced by acts like Anticimex, Bathory, and Totalitär, the band intertwines their crust roots with sinister, haunting soundscapes and unique blackened riff attacks.

“Paranoia” was recorded at the infamous Studio Fredman (At The Gates, Amon Amarth, Opeth) by Fredrik Nordström in the dead of a chilling Swedish winter! The riffs are raw and powerful, with haunting melodies colliding with a storm of raw sonic shrapnel. Both Martyrdöd guitarists are veterans of the Swedish metal scene also playing in: Skitsystem, Agrimonia, Miasmal etc.”
